FHM Yorkshire's latest schools project was the construction of Creations Children's Centre in the grounds of Ling Bob School, Pellon, Halifax.
The school remained open during the construction period so our first priority was to visit the school to explain to the pupils and staff how easily accidents can happen on construction sites and why it is important not to play in such areas. The pupils, aged between 4 and 11 years old, learnt about how workers stay safe on building sites and watched a special DVD showing building site hazards. They then took part in a question and answer session with the Considerate Constructors Scheme mascot, "Ivor Goodsite" and had the chance to try on high viz jackets, hard hats and rigger boots.
Throughout the project we maintained excellent relationships with the school, sponsoring attendance prizes and involving them at each stage of the work.
The centre is a traditional cavity wall construction, two storey building fitted with lift and disabled access / parking. The building contains designated areas specially designed for ages 0 - 2 years and 2 - 5 years. Other areas include laundry, kitchenette, office, play areas and it is connected to the main school via a new corridor.
Although neither BREEAM nor Code for Sustainable Homes applies to this building there are construction elements which have been incorporated which would meet or exceed certain standards set within those assessment codes and reduce the carbon footprint of the building.
The following testimonial was received from Rosemary Solan, Head
Teacher at Ling Bob School;
"As the project draws to a close, on behalf of the
Governors, Staff, Pupils, Parents and wider local community I wish
to formally record my thanks to FHM."
"Your staff have readily taken on board any issues or concerns
raised by the school and addressed them promptly and
efficiently."
"Your attention to detail regarding H&S has been
exemplary and at no point have I had concerns that anyone at the
school was subject to a risk that had not been identified and
resolutions put in place. I would highly recommend FHM to work on
any similar project. Any new build or refurbishment undoubtedly
carries additional levels of stress but this has been minimized by
the positive approaches of your team."
